“My querida is coming home,” Marlena said as she tucked her cell phone into her purse and rolled over on the blanket. She propped her head up on one elbow. Picnic dinners had become a habit of late, and the unusually
warm December day sent a pleasant breeze across the park. She looked over at Ernesto, reclining on the blanket in a similar position.

He wore a casual pair of Docker slacks and a short sleeved cotton shirt. Several of the upper buttons were left undone, revealing more skin than he’d exposed in quite some time. “Esta bien,” Ernesto replied. “That will make you happy, I know. And I’ll be happy to have David back.”

Marlena giggled. “Si. She asked me to tell you something next time I see you. She has no idea I’ve seen you every day since they left.”

“Tell me what?”

“To get busy with the site preparation of El Mirador. She wants to start building.”

Ernesto smiled. “She’s in for a surprise, then. I take it David didn’t let on what he’s accomplished.”

Marlena shook her head and sat up. “Do you want to go for a walk?”

“Good idea.” Ernesto began gathering the picnic things, but out of the corner of his eye, followed the movement of Marlena’s lithe body as she stood and brushed a few stray crumbs off her skirt. When she leaned over to fold up the blanket, he took a long gulp from his unfinished bottle of Perrier before looking away. “This way?” he asked, pointing in the direction of the park’s central fountain.

“Okay.” They strolled together up the cobbled path, despite the falling dusk. Neither spoke until they reached a grove of trees that arched overhead.

“Marly, what will this mean for you, when El Mirador is transformed? Have you decided whether you want to stay?” Ernesto asked.

Marlena slowed to a stop. “I haven’t. If Zara needs me, I will stay. But there are things to be done back home. Bills to be paid, appointments to keep. I have guests invited for Christmas.”

Damn. He felt no closer to gaining a commitment from her either way. He thought the time they’d spent together recently had made her consider certain possibilities. It seemed so obvious. Stay here, start a renewed chapter in her life. With him. “I understand. And after that?”

She looked at him with an expression of frustration. “I don’t know. What is it you want me to say?”

Ernesto felt steel forming in his spine. If she wouldn’t speak her mind now, she never would. It was up to him. Is that how Tristan captured her? Being forceful and controlling? Worth a try. He moved in close, placing his hands on her shoulders. He maneuvered her toward the sturdy trunk of a black oak. Her back met the rough bark,
and he held her firm against it, moving one hand down to her waist, and placing the other flat against the tree, framing her in. “Say you’ll stay.” His lips came within millimeters of hers, their noses brushing. “Say you’ll marry me.” He held her eyes captive, not allowing her to look away. They seemed to expand, become luminous. So beautiful, he thought his heart might burst if they broke contact. So he refused let it happen. He consumed her mouth with his own, his skin rough and hot against hers cool and tender. He slid his hand up to her breast, his thumb grazing the nipple through the sheer fabric of her blouse.

Marlena twitched and stiffened, trapped between him and the tree trunk. A soft grunt echoed from her throat. He kissed her harder, unrelenting, until he felt her acquiesce. He pressed his whole body against hers, making her acknowledge his need, then pulled his lips away just enough to whisper. “Say it, Marly. You know this is right.”

The sight of her pert bosoms moving up and down with each anxious breath she took nearly drove him mad. “Ernesto,” she gasped. “Make love to me…please.”
